The Reed Dance Festival in Eswatini

What is Umhlanga Reed Dance? Umhlanga/ reed dance is a living tradition observed for decades by the Swati nation. It celebrates cultural heritage, unity, respect, and national identity. This tradition brings together thousands of maidens from across the country.

When will it take place? This year their Majesties have invited the regiment of young maidens to join the Royal house in cutting the reed from the 25th of August to the 31st of August 2026. With the main day being the 31st of August 2026. Is there a Fee? No. This is an open experience, attendees can be at the festival grounds at no charge, although you will pass through entry points, they are only for screening and security and no fees to be paid there.
